[edit] History

One of the first "Blade" putters, the 8802 is the catalyst for several designs that are still in production today.

Legend has it that the first batch of 8802s were made from metal found in the "Scrap Bin" around Wilson. This rumor hasn't been confirmed or denied, but the mystical powers of the 8802 are legendary. This putter is linked to about every major player in golf.

Mr. Palmer signed his first professional contract with Wilson Sporting Goods in November 1955 and shortly thereafter, he helped develop the Wilson “Designed By Arnold Palmer” blade putter. This was based on the Early Wilson 8802 model designs. A design he shaped from the MacGregor IMG Ironmasters.

After his contract with Wilson, he began fiddling with the MacGregor IMG Ironmasters again. When he started his own golf company in 1963, he began selling variations of those designs and eventually settled on the Arnold Palmer Original Putter, which was sold by his company until it closed in 2000. Since then, Callaway adopted the design and produces and sells the Arnold Palmer Original Putter.
